Gary Vallen Ed.D is a full Professor in the School of Hotel and Restaurant Management at Northern Arizona University. He became one of the founding faculty members when the program was initiated in 1988, joining the team after almost two decades of industry management. In industry, Vallen worked a variety of positions, including; senior management positions in hotel operations, casino gaming management, vice-president and assistant general manager positions of hotel casino operations in Nevada. Other industry positions include; sales and marketing management, restaurant operations, and private city/country club association management.
Along with a successful career in education, marked by over 36-refereed articles and numerous national and international presentations, Dr. Vallen also operates a successful consulting business. Known as Gary Vallen Hospitality Consultants, this consulting business has been incorporated since 1971 and specializes in casino management and hotel operations. Performing roughly 50 consulting contracts annually with an on-call staff approaching 80 industry-experienced associates, Dr. Vallen’s consulting projects run the range from; guest and event attendee survey research to proprietary feasibility analyses to actual hands-on casino events.
Dr. Vallen is co-author of the best-selling hospitality industry textbook Check-In Check-Out (currently in its 7th edition, published by Prentice-Hall). Editor of another text entitled A Host of Opportunities; An Introduction to Hospitality Management (currently in its 2nd edition, published by Prentice-Hall). And has written chapters in several other texts including; Hospitality in Review; A Capstone Course, Tourism and Gaming on American Indian Lands, and of course, A Host of Opportunities; An Introduction to Hospitality Management.
